Day 224: the houseplants' final push

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

At last, the garden is bathing in proper summer sunlight. As it streams through my window, making it almost too uncomfortable to sit at my desk and write, my thoughts turn to winter and to the diminishing window of time available for the houseplants to put on growth before they enter the hibernal, ticking-over phase. Low light levels, wildly fluctuating temperatures and dry air will stress the big leaved specimens in particular, and so every new leaf or stem is greeted with delight right now. I’m particularly pleased to welcome the new foliage on the alocasia which had, for the past six months, been doing a passable impression of something about to expire. With perhaps eight to ten weeks before things slow down significantly, now is not a time to be lax with the weekly feed.
