Day 226: let it go and let it grow

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Lovers of neat edges might find the garden a particular challenge at this time of year, when every plant seems hell bent upon blurring the line between itself and its neighbours. Tightly clipped topiary gets wafty, lawns blend into borders, and even usually reliably disciplined plants begin to let their hair down. For anyone feeling overwhelmed by the encroaching chaos, a minute or two spent removing faded petals from the echinops by rubbing the spherical flower heads between finger and thumb can be a restorative act, neat blue globes emerging once more from dishevelled grey-brown balls. As for everything else, for now, it’s as well to let it go, and let it grow.
