Day 248: hazel

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The hazel shells are plumping, fresh and pale green on the branch, evidence of a few having been munched lying on the ground – though whether to blame squirrels, foxes, or the dog is anyone’s guess just now. A hazel tree in the garden is a fine thing to have, even if it’s shoved into a corner or allowed to reach a fuller height in the run of a mixed hedge; not only do you get fresh cobnuts (always assuming you can beat the squirrels to them), but your garden will be provided with a ready supply of long, straight poles from which to fashion the most sympathetic plant supports. Annoyingly, being is right on the boundary behind the shed, the hazel tree in our garden takes some getting to, but although it may technically belong to the neighbours, its overhanging branches (and the fruit suspended thereupon) are fare game.
