Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Pelargoniums have a reputation for being a bit showy – and deservedly so. There are the zonals, the ones most of us grew up calling ‘geraniums’, in shades of bright scarlet, pink or white – scarcely subtle, but so evocative of hot summers and mediterranean balconies. There are other ostentatious groups – the regals, angels, stellars – but it’s the scented leaved ones that I find myself drawn to, and their flowers are pretty, but quite demure. And then there’s the species Pelargonium sidoides, with his lovely leaves of blue-grey, presently hidden deeply within a display where more boisterous foliage has gained the upper hand. Not to be forgotten, long stems are extended, terminated in exquisite flowers of the deepest magenta, a reminder that the quiet ones can also take your breath away.
