Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
‘Queen Charlotte’ sounds like a grand name for a windflower, but since the Japanese anemone (Anemone hupehensis var. Japonica) attains a loftier height than most of its immediate relatives, I think it’s appropriate in this case. Here’s Anemone x hybrida ‘Königin Charlotte’, being photobombed shamelessly by the seed head of wood avens, though I rather like the chutzpah. A word on the nomenclature – you’ll probably notice hupehensis var. Japonica and x hybrida being used interchangeably, perhaps the species names tomentosa and vitifolia thrown into the mix for good measure. The reason seems to be that noone’s particularly kept track of the family trees for the most popular cultivars, but any Japanese anemone sold with the name ‘Queen Charlotte’ or it’s German equivalent is likely to be as pictured here.
