Day 252: a sedum worth consideration

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I was having a conversation earlier in the week about sedums – the big chunky ‘ice plant’ garden-border types now reclassified as Hylotelephium (it’s a huge genus, so it always helps to narrow things down a bit) – with someone who loves the leaves, but not the flowers. I think I might know what they mean – sometimes the enthusiastic floral floof of an ‘Autumn Joy’ can be a bit of a shock after the restrained, yeasty bloom of the succulent stems and leaves – I’ve certainly got some that are zinging with highlighter pink in the beds just now. But ‘Matrona’ always seems to get the balance just right, its waxy flowers in shades of rose and cream with a greenish blush a perfect compliment to the plum-coloured foliage with its glaucous tinge. Definitely a sedum worth your consideration.
