Day 253: Rudbeckia hirta 'Cappuccino'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

It rained last night – a proper, stormy downpour, with thunder and lightning – and, though it was all over by the morning, the garden was full of tiny raindrop lenses on every surface. I found myself missing the mahogany petals of Rudbeckia hirta 'Cappuccino’, which I’ve not grown this year. Not quite as robust as some of its cousins that we grow here in the UK as perennials, and therefore treated as an annual, it’s rumoured that it has gotten itself through milder winters and flowered even more strongly in its second and even third years. And who wouldn’t want those dark, unctuous daisies in their border year upon year? On the list for a spring sowing.
