Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
The last of the petunias, confirming that I’ll be winning no prizes either for deadheading or container watering this year (they should really go on well into October, until they get whacked by frosts), and also reminding me that I need to be planting up the containers with their autumnal display. In some circles it seems fashionable to be sniffy about bedding plants such as these, but I love a petunia – the smell alone greeting me as I come home would be reason enough to grow them, but their cheery flowers and the odd, hairiness (or is it stickiness?) of the leaves and stems, as though they want to hang on to you when you come to visit for a bit of plant froofing action. I shall miss them, but console myself at their loss by buying seeds for next year.
