Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
It doesn’t seem to matter how much I know about what happens when you cut a plant, how well I know the theory of pruning, or how many times I’ve carried it out, I always find myself waiting with bated breath to see how something responds to a hard prune. And, having allowed it to do its own thing for a very long time, our tall philadelphus did get a particularly hard prune this year since, instead of staggering the job over two seasons, I went all in and cut back the whole plant. Flowering will be significantly reduced next year, though, judging from the new shoots now appearing with some enthusiasm, there will be some new flowering wood. And we’ll no longer be requiring a ladder to appreciate the blossom.
