Day 267: yellow coneflower

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

When it comes to yellow daisy-type flowers, there are more of them in the garden than you can shake a stick at. From humble dandelions in the lawn and ragwort in the longer grass, to the flowerbeds themselves where, normally at this time of year, you’d expect the slot for that colour and form to be occupied by sunflowers and rudbeckia. Coneflowers (Echinacea spp.), I tend to think of in shades from white through pinks and purples to red, with a little dalliance in the green region of the colour wheel. But, quite unexpectedly, there’s a yellow one – Echinacea paradoxa var paradoxa – whose name seems to say it all.
