Ever hopeful of more flowers, I have my eye on the recently planted Echinacea ‘White Swan’, which have fattened up nicely from a purely vegetative state over the summer and are only just now beginning to bud up. It’s rare for frost to hit here during October, and the overnight temperatures are still courting double figures, but it’s the daylight that’ll probably frustrate my blooming ambitions and, if I’m honest, I should probably snip the buds off and let the plants concentrate on establishing their root systems ahead of winter dormancy, to give them the best chance of seeing it through to the spring (echinacea can be a bit hit and miss on cold, damp soils). Will I take my own advice? Probably not.
