Day 279: a face full of spider web

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

If there’s a way to walk down the garden first thing on an autumn morning without getting a face full of spider web, I’ve not yet discovered it. I run through a quick succession of emotions – vague disgust, annoyance, then sadness – and wonder how a garden spider (Araneus diadematus) can possibly survive if her attempts at catching dinner are continually frustrated by my great head blundering through her complex overnight creations. Then I remember how she treats her mates, and I don’t feel quite so bad.
