A soggy kind of grandeur settles over the flowerbeds during October. On these chill and misty mornings, dew hanging heavily in the air and gathering portentously on leaf tips and petal ends, there’s a freshness about it all that seems both entirely appropriate but also – somehow – equally at odds with the decidedly knackered state of the floral contingent of the garden. But even the most gnarly of plants seems intent on styling it out, determined as these tired cosmos, with such an absurd degree of hauteur it’s hard to know whether to be amused or impressed at their refusal to go gently. In the face of such combined denial and resolve, I think we can afford to be both.
