Day 288: Cercidiphyllum japonicum

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

If you find yourself in need of a giggle one October, you could do worse than loiter behind the katsura tree by the nursery tables just inside the garden gates at Great Comp, there to watch people searching about in puzzlement for the source of the delicious candyfloss scent upon the air; the tree by which you lurk, of course, being the culprit. This is Cercidiphyllum japonicum, bright gold just now as the foliage begins to carpet the ground beneath, and you’d think that scrunching up a handful of leaves would release a concentrated whiff of caramel, but seemingly not so – it’s as if the tree is sweating the smell (an organic compound known as maltol) out though its pores. Which, quite probably, is just what’s happening, as the trunk and roots jealously suck all the sugars from the leaves before abandoning them to gravity.
