Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
A shrubby salvia is a grand thing to have in the garden, flowering reliably and persisting late into the season, its woody stems handling whatever winter has to throw at it, at least here in the soft south, providing they’re not sitting in cold and soggy soil. I’ve come to rely on ‘Hot Lips’ (though I confess I’ve always seen the lower petals more as moustaches than mouths), but I think I could get used to Salvia greggii ‘Amethyst Lips’, which has the same deep purple colouring as Salvia x jamensis ‘Nachtvlinder’, but with the white bicolour markings. Still lippy, then, but a tad more refined.
