I’ve been greatly enjoying the change in pace and mood in the garden over the past few days, as though the outriders sent by Autumn to claim the ground at the solstice have now been followed by the full force of the season, blowing in over a turbulent week a full month later. Only now are the leaves beginning to colour and fall and, as the chlorophyll fades to reveal burnished hues, there’s sufficient warmth still for a last ditch effort from those perennials only now recovering from summer exertion. Persicaria ‘Purple Fantasy’ all but disappeared in August (I’ve noticed that, on the warmest days, it does appreciate a good watering – which this year it didn’t get), and now decides to stick its head up through the oak-leaved hydrangea, past the wreckage of an althaea seedling. With no frost forecast for a while, it may have a few weeks’ grace.
