Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Plants are still coming into the garden, and it feels as though there’s a sudden burst of energy towards the end of the gardening year, a chance to get new plantings off to a start while there’s still warmth in the soil, a chance for curious roots at least to be on nodding acquaintance with the soil around them before winter’s invitation to drowse away the next few months proves too tempting to resist. Here, this manifests in a curious manner – no sooner do we think we’ve got the little courtyard tidied and the tabletop sufficiently cleared to be used for its intended purpose, than more plants arrive at their temporary staging post. Soon, they will be off to their new homes, and it’ll be too cold or too dark to plant any more till spring, by which time we’ll have considerably less inclination to dine at the table outside the back door, though we shall force ourselves on brighter, drier days, or what’s the space for? Next year, I’ll move the plant storage area, the better to preserve domestic harmony.
