All the fuss about paeonies gets made in late spring, those few weeks as May becomes June and the long-awaited blousiest of blooms graces the garden with its presence, and never for long. But, months after the fuss has died down and we’ve come to rely on flowers with greater staying power, paeonies are quietly putting on a solid performance in a supporting role, providing some of the richest autumnal colour in the garden, if only at a low down, background kind of level. Too often, I find myself falling into the trap of thinking to myself in passing, ‘oh, that’s nice – they do that, too...’, but if I’m honest with myself, it’s that good, maybe I’d be tempted to grow them for their autumnal display alone.
