Day 315: waiting for hips

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I am doing a poor impression of a patient person while waiting for the hips on the dog rose to form. It makes sense that the roses in the beds have barely a hip between them since I’ve been deadheading them for weeks, but those I’ve not been able to reach, such as the ones atop an archway in the photo, or the Ballerina I’ve just forgotten about, are taunting me with their ripe and swollen seedpods. Noone would deadhead a dog rose, so really, why the delay? It has the best hips in the garden, lasting for months on end, so I shouldn’t complain. But I will.
