Day 316: essential objects

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

One object that you can’t imagine getting through your day without, whose absence would send you into a flat spin. One tool that feels almost like an extension of your own body, something that you reach for without thinking, even when it’s not there. For years it was the typewriter keyboard for me – it’s not unusual for me to dream of my fingers shaping words as key strokes – but since I discovered gardening, my trusty secateurs are rarely far away, and even out and about my hand will go to my belt at the faintest glimpse of an unruly stem. We’re moving into another intense season of snipping, so these (Felcos No. 2s at work, Niwaki at home) will need a little TLC. I might even treat them to a new spring.
