Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
As the years passed, I began to feel a bit sorry for the tree on Christmas day. Uprooted, stuck in a pot, shoved in a corner of a room and bedecked with lights and tinsel and all manner of wotnot while odd human creatures rush about displaying behaviours characteristic of varying levels of stress, before falling asleep in front of a strangely glowing box of moving pictures. How bewildering – and to have to experience this on your own. As the indoor jungle in our home grows, at least I feel the tree has some company – if not quite of its own genus, at least of the same kingdom. The tree we bought for Christmas two years ago – still in possession of its root system – has had to spend almost that entire period recovering in the garden from an unfortunate post-Christmas event when, loathe to be parted from its company, we allowed it to remain long after twelfth night indoors, minus its decorations, until it began to sprout new growth. At which point we stuck it out in the garden where, softened up by fireside chats and central heating, it instantly fell victim to sub-zero temperatures. It’s back with us this year, having only to contend with the over-enthusiastic attentions of a spaniel puppy, which might make it long for the nip of the frost.
Merry Christmas, one and all.
