Day 360: a morning cup of camellia

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The camellias bask in the pale golden light of the morning sun, dew beginning to gather and run along the surface of each leathery leaf. I take my tea into the garden where I stand and watch for a moment; two, maybe more – the foliage seems perfectly designed for the tasks of collecting and shedding water, a steep valley with the midrib flowing through the centre, the whole blade angled toward a tapering point. I can’t help but be annoyed on behalf of such exquisite planning when the water ignores the efforts made on its behalf and starts to rush toward the nearest edge before throwing itself into the air. Impolite. But the tea is getting cold, there are more presents to organise, and with a last approving nod at flower buds fattening in readiness for spring, I turn and head back indoors.
