Your mum may refer to the flowering quince as ‘Japonica’ (mine does, it confused me for years). Botanists would have you refer to these shrubs as Chaenomeles speciosa, or a hybrid between this and the actual Japanese quince Chaenomeles japonica, itself of less garden value as it throws suckers up like nobody’s business and fast becomes an unruly thicket. Handsome trained against any wall, muted stonework in particular throws the beautiful, waxy flowers into sharp relief, raindrops providing the perfect ornamentation.
