Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
There are so many varieties of cosmos now, all wonderful in their own way. But Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Purity’ was the first I grew from seed many years ago, and still today the simple white version outperforms all others in terms of vigour and floral generosity. This is a plant that very much owns its space, one of those annuals that you can’t quite believe began life a few short months ago as a tiny seed – by the end of August, thick, almost woody stems, billowing fresh green and ferny foliage and a cloud of pure white flowers that keep on coming. There are fancier forms with double flowers, bright colours and flouncy petals, but this is a classic to which I’ll always return. It’s not the only cosmos I grow, but it’s probably the only one I’ll grow every year.
