Day 265: Rose 'Twice in a Blue Moon'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

To give a rose a name like ‘Twice in a Blue Moon’ would seem to suggest that its flowers appear, if not hardly every, at least almost hardly ever. This is misleading. While mine hasn’t been continually clothed in gorgeous lilac blooms since mid spring, it does have three or four good flowering sessions throughout the season and is currently treating us to a late summer show. It’s an improved version of ‘Blue Moon’ – less prone to pests and disease – a hybrid tea with large, well-formed and strongly fragranced flowers, the exact colour of parma violets. And a proper rose shape – no old English flounce, thank you very much.
