Backlight. It’s something that autumn does very well, particularly in the garden. Normally, budding photographers are told not to face into the sun when composing a picture for fear of confusing the camera’s meter and horribly underexposing the subject, but this is one of those times when you can happily ignore the rules and make the sun in your face work for you. There’s a glimmering quality about the way the rakish autumn light picks out the edges of any object it encounters, shines through petals and creates merry shadow play with the rampant growth of summer that, added together, equals something very close to magic.
