Day 270: frost chicken

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The month is flying by, but it’s still September, and there’s time yet for things to ping in the beds. Just – at least when it comes to flowers, but there’s such joy to be had in these last few weeks from seeing a fat bud about to burst. Here, in a darkling corner of the border in front of the tall hedge, the Japanese Anemone x hybrida ‘Königin Charlotte’ and Symphiotrichum lateriflorum ‘Lady in Black’ hover tantalisingly together upon that mark... the aster in particular is a tease (or, just as likely, is trying to tell me she wants more sun) – a ‘will she, won’t she?’ game of chicken with the first frosts. She’ll be fine.
