Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Clusters of bright berries are here already, bathed in golden October sunshine, and it’s hard to escape the feeling that the guests for your evening’s dinner party have turned up just after lunch. “You’re not needed yet!” I feel like shouting – we still have flowers, and warming sun. Of course I want berries to lift the winter gloom, dull days in need of sparkle and intense colour, but such brazen punctuality almost offends – and in this moment I recall that the garden remains supremely indifferent to my calendar. The trees are ready to produce seed, the birds will soon be grateful for the berry’s flesh, and that’s about all there is to it. End, as they say, of. However horticulturally skilled we might be, whatever degree of intervention we find appropriate to take, it’s as well to remember we are never more than the under-gardener.
