Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
In spite of the weather doing its best to bluster, here in Kent October continues relatively mild. There is warmth yet in the soil, and a fresh crop of seedlings and weedlings (the latter mostly sticky willy, I’m guessing – Bill will enjoy munching those) has appeared over the last few days. So much life, if you choose to look, and a reminder that there’s still time for hardy annuals sown now to germinate and develop the nascent structures that will give them a head start in the spring over plants sown after the winter lull. Each new year I resolve to sow less, in an effort to raise fewer, healthier plants. By mid-March, every surface rammed with seed trays, the plan’s in tatters, but now the glimmerings of a loophole – which would let me sow what I like in autumn – begin to reveal themselves, and I go in search of seeds.
