Day 286: ice and fire

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Rarely moved to deprive the garden of flowers, I now feel duty bound to cut what I can for the house. Autumn has turned filthy, and shows no sign letting up for at least the next week, rain battering each brave bloom into submission – who knows how many more will come this side of winter? I grab a jacket, snips from the kitchen drawer and head out to gather what I can, conscious that the remaining flowers fall into two distinct camps – one distinguished by a kind of pale beauty, the other by a vibrant passion. The fluffy fillers have packed up and gone home. Ice and fire – there is no middle ground, and both just now are sodden as I cram them, dripping, into vases.
