Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
The bench outside the back door has taken on something of the character of the waiting room or way station – a limbo where plants come to rest, temporarily, before going to their long-term homes. The function used to be performed by the patio table, but this became annoying whenever we wanted to eat a meal or simply while away a quiet moment in the company of a cup of tea and the sparrows in the surrounding shrubs, or the forward young blackbird who nonchalantly hops up and pecks at something in the gravel by your feet. Today, nandina and pittosporum bide their time patiently until I carve out an hour to replant the containers at the front for the winter, while violas...well, you can always find a spot for violas. More plants will be joining them at the end of the week, bound eventually for the front garden of dear friends. Heaven help anyone who actually wants to sit down out here.
