Day 291: a favourite acer

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Is it possible to have a favourite acer? It seems an especially difficult feat at this time of year, when every maple seems bent on outdoing its relatives in the autumn colour stakes. The field maple, Acer campestre, is always a strong contender for the most golden of trees in the October countryside, but in the garden I might be inclined to nominate this coral bark maple, grabbing our attention now with hues from lime green through burnished orange to a rich, buttery yellow and then, having finally divested itself of its foliage, proudly displaying bark and stems of a deep vivid pink. So today, I’ll go for Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’, but can’t promise it won’t be another tomorrow.
