Day 292: red mistletoe cactus

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Lurking among the ferns in the living room, and doing a very good job of blending in, is Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa ‘Red Coral’ – one of those jungle dwelling cacti that grow epiphytically on the surface of trees. Perhaps better known are the Schlumbergera, or Christmas cacti (coming imminently to a garden centre or supermarket near you), though I can’t help feeling these seem a little uptight next to the more flamboyant Pseudorhipsalis, particularly if you keep the latter close to a window. Higher light levels will cause its succulent leaves to take on a reddish tinge – a colouration which, together with the small round fruit, gives rise to the common name ‘red mistletoe cactus’. I prefer to keep mine a little further into the room, nestled between ferns, where it reminds me of seaweed billowing in some unseen ocean current.
