Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
The hedgerows are full of rose hips – the hedges and many shrubs in the garden too, where a tangle of wild rose has romped through them. The shrub roses themselves... not so much. It’s not for want of trying, they’d have made fruit weeks ago had it not been for my obsessive deadheading. I’m almost – but not quite – ready to give up on the flowers and let them have their way. These little red bullets are among the most generous gifts of autumn, their jammy innards packed so full of Vitamin C I’m never entirely sure why our navy had to discover citrus fruit to keep scurvy at bay. If only I can bring myself to harvest them, and sieve out the hairy seeds, for the reward of a bottle of rich, rose hip syrup to ward off colds and sniffles. They look so good in the garden though... maybe I’ll scrump them from the neighbours’.
