Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Those of us who garden never quite lose that sense of wonder that something as small as a seed can be transformed within the space of a single growing season into a plant as tall as a person. This, I believe, is one of the things that makes growing corn – maize, if you must – so rewarding (the other thing being the delicious cobs boiled, salted, drizzled in oil or butter). Their useful days now behind them, we keep them standing about, battered by wind and rain, for as long as we can – for the company, if nothing else – a very real, somehow friendly, presence in the garden, even the slightest breeze prompting them to whisper and mutter amongst themselves, and always in the most agreeable manner.
