Day 306: leopard plant

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I cannot for the life of me work out why Ligularia dentata ‘Desdemona’ is known as the ‘leopard plant’. Perhaps someone will enlighten me – it’s not as though it has obvious spots. Rather, its stand-out features are large, leathery leaves, purplish above with red undersides; bright orange, somewhat rough-and-ready looking daisy flowers above, and a liking for damp spots in the garden. Each of which should be sufficient to recommend it to the gardener, though I confess my favourite time of year with this plant is just now, when the seed heads turn into buff-coloured pompoms atop long, red liquorice stems.
