Day 308: garden taming

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Give me a wheelbarrow, bright November sunshine and some batteries for the radio and I’m set up for a day of happy garden taming. There’s no need to go bonkers and hack at everything in sight – there are plenty of stems that will hold their own throughout the winter, but if it’s gone mushy or mildewy, it gets the chop. Likewise those perennials that have become rather too well established – looking at you, Japanese anemones – and need their territory reduced somewhat (free plants for friends! It’ll be years before they realise the full implications of your kind gift).  Lawns are beginning to get mushy underfoot, but there’s still a chance to cut a crisp edge to see us through the colder months. Garden partially tamed, order superficially restored – if you’ve no time to do it everywhere, do it somewhere, ideally somewhere close to the house, so you can kid yourself while gazing out of the window, or strolling just beyond the backdoor with a cup of hot chocolate, that all is under control.
