Day 309: a peculiar alchemy

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

A peculiar alchemy occurs when outside meets in. If you’re dead posh, you can remodel your house so the dividing line between indoor living space and garden is little more than a shimmering veil (or perhaps a set of bifold doors – the effect is almost indistinguishable). A similar fizz can be obtained on a much smaller budget by the simple expedient of bringing bits of the garden into the house but, just now, when every flower you snip brings you closer to the season’s last, there’s an extra frisson in the act, something elevated when the last of the garden’s bounty gets to occupy the same space as a houseplant of a much greater vintage. A collocation of the ephemeral and the enduring creates a certain desperate energy, tinged with a little sadness. Quite what either party makes of the other in the pictured collection is open to interpretation, and my aspidistra remains tight lipped on the frothiness of dahlias, zinnias and hydrangeas.
