Day 318: mush

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The season of mush is upon us. It’s getting damp in the border, and lines begin to blur. Those plants that stand straight resist the worst of the messy softening, yielding with a satisfying snip of the secateurs – sunflowers, peonies, Japanese anemones, even asters. The sedums are the exception – their stems snip crisply, but their surfaces have become slimy and befuddling to the gloves. Those plants that sprawl and loll, even stringy geraniums, capture the wet and return it to the gardener with interest. Hostas, the worst offenders, contain oceans within each sodden leaf.
