Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Those lucky enough to have soils that stay relatively dry can leave their dahlias in the ground over winter, but it’s wise for the rest of us to lift and store them till spring. Having now been visited by the blackening frost that reduces the top growth to funereal rags, I’m poised for a few chilly hours at the weekend, unearthing fat tubers, cutting off stems and inspecting what’s left for signs of rot, before boxing them up and storing them in the shed, upside-down so any moisture can drain out from the amputated stumps. I tell myself each year that, like some dahlia supremo, I’ll wash them clean of every last spec of mud and dry them thoroughly before stowing them away, but I’m kidding myself.
