Day 320: staghorn sumach

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The staghorn sumach (Rhys typhina) has not had a vintage year in terms of autumn colour, but it’s hardly alone there. Usually by now it’s a veritable bonfire of yellow, orange and red but, like so many other trees and shrubs, it hung onto its green for as long as possible and has only now reluctantly deigned to undertake a half-hearted run through the autumnal hues before petulantly flinging its leaves to the ground. You can’t have everything, I suppose – and one unlooked-for result is that I find I’m peering more closely at the trees to see the progress of the colour shift – so slow this year you can almost watch the chlorophyll breaking down as sugars drain from the leaves, up along the veins into twig, branch, trunk and, finally, root.
