It’s helpful to hold a mental image of what you want to achieve at the forefront of your mind, the better to get you through the slogging stages. The fiery stems of pollarded scarlet willow shining brightly in the winter sun were the subject of this morning’s meditations, as the rain fell all around and I thrust the spade yet again into the cold, grey, slurping clay. Each hole filled instantly with water, but still it felt good to be planting again. I would have taken a photo for posterity but, unwilling to risk fumbling the phone with wet fingers and dropping it in the soup, these words will have to make do as a record.
