Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Hot on the tails of its cousin, the purple leaved plum (Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii’, Day 60), the white-flowered cherry plum has burst into flower; tight buds exploding into tiny fireworks, five rounded petals opening up to admit the passage of the anthers with their rocket trails behind them. It’s always an exciting moment – so exciting that I got completely carried away, and initially announced the arrival of the blackthorn, until my buddy Celia set me straight (look at the sepals, Andrew, they bend backwards!). It’s not the first time she’s rescued me, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
