Day 121: send rain

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Caught between being cross at the forecast for leaving me mentally unprepared for a soaking, and delighted that the sky was finally breaking after weeks without rain, I found myself inclined towards the latter, striding back through the veg beds to get the woolly jumper that’s always proved so marvellously resistant to all but the heaviest of downpours. Need I have bothered? Probably worth it for the inevitable chilly drop in pressure, but my t-shirt would soon have dried out after the briefest of showers. Thankfully I’ve taken pains to mulch this garden (not mine) well, holding what moisture there is close to the soil, but even so, a good while was spent looking for signs of drought stress and watering hedges and new plantings. Send rain, the proper stuff. Stat.
