Day 122: an angry rhubarb

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The rhubarb is shaking its fist at the sky. I think I know how it feels, though it’s interesting that this particular crown is always that much more cantankerous than the more mature clump by the greenhouse which, in spite of being hemmed in on all sides by ground elder, is impeccably behaved. A rhubarb’s readiness to flower can be attributable to several things – maturity, variety, or maybe stress, the latter almost certainly being the culprit here. Stress due to not only to dryness of this spring, but the daftness of the gardener for planting it too close to thirsty cobnut roots on the edge of the nuttery. Time for a move.
